Project Description

Explore is a multimodal interface concept developed in the course Interface Design, with the task of designing a system based on haptic interaction. The goal was to create a museum visiting experience centered on personalization and on building upon visitors’ prior knowledge, specifically within the context of natural history museums. The project was developed in collaboration with Museum Schloss Rosenstein. At the core of the system is a haptic interface in the form of an interactive table, which serves as the primary point of engagement within the museum space. To complement this physical interface, I designed a supporting web app that extends the experience before, during, and after the visit. The app enables users to track their progress, access quizzes, and review collected content. The prototype also visualizes real-time visitor distribution within the museum, allowing the system to dynamically adjust recommended routes in order to reduce congestion and improve flow. Along the personalized route, additional information is presented in layers adapted to the visitor’s existing knowledge level, enabling both younger audiences and expert visitors to engage with the content in a meaningful and accessible way.

Role & Scope:

Collaborative work with two partners over the fourth semester, with shared responsibility across research, brainstorming, and building the prototype.I took additional ownership in creating the animations for the interface as well as rendering out the concept.

Research / Methods

The project was grounded in on-site investigations of museum environments, including interviews with visitors and staff to understand real-world interaction patterns and pain points. Throughout development, I iteratively tested the multimodal prototype with potential users inside museum spaces, gathering feedback that informed both the physical interface and its digital logic.
